Abstract

This study examines the meaning of John 20:29, “Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed,” in the context of Generation Z (Gen Z). The research is motivated by the 2021 Barna Group report showing that only 4% of Gen Z in the United States possess a biblical worldview, coupled with their perception of the church as outdated and irrelevant, as well as findings from the Bilangan Research Center indicating that Gen Z in Indonesia is increasingly less engaged in Bible reading. The purpose of this study is to determine whether the meaning of John 20:29 can be logically accepted by Gen Z, to identify their characteristics and the challenges they face in matters of faith in the postmodern era, and to formulate strategies for fostering Gen Z’s faith. Using a qualitative method with a descriptive-analytical approach, this research focuses on literature review and an interpretive study of the biblical text in John 20:29. The findings reveal that a contextual understanding of John 20:29 can bridge the gap between traditional faith and the worldview of Gen Z. The main challenges Gen Z faces in matters of belief include skepticism, moral relativism, and the influence of digital technology. The proposed strategies include employing relevant apologetic approaches, utilizing digital media for faith formation, and establishing authentic and inclusive faith communities. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of the dynamics of Gen Z’s faith and offers practical approaches for contemporary church ministry.
