Abstract

This article examines the thought of Jean-Jacques Rousseau from the perspective of Indonesian Evangelical theology, focusing on his ideas of the religion of the heart, his rejection of special revelation, and his skepticism toward ecclesiastical authority. Rousseau’s legacy has significantly contributed to shaping trends of pluralism, syncretism, private spirituality, and moral relativism in Indonesia, which directly challenge the foundations of Evangelical faith rooted in Scripture, the uniqueness of Christ, and the role of the church. The novelty of this study lies in its contextual emphasis: it explores how Rousseau’s philosophy has permeated the spiritual dynamics of Indonesia’s urban congregation in the digital age an aspect relatively rarely discussed in depth within the local Evangelical discourse. This study is urgent as it offers insight that can help Indonesian Evangelical churches reaffirm the authority of Scripture and the identity of the church as the body of Christ amid a modern spiritual climate that tends to resist institutional authority and reject exclusive truth claims. Employing a qualitative literature study method, this research aims to enrich contextual apologetics discourse and equip the church to face the challenges of moral relativism and cultural syncretism. The findings affirm that the authority of special revelation and the role of the church community remain essential for shaping authentic Christian faith and for addressing the spiritual needs of the modern generation.
