The Spirituality of Saint John Paul II as an Analytical Lens for the Spiritual Practices of Catholic Youth: A Case Study at Saint Johannes Sukamandi Station

Spiritual life constitutes a fundamental aspect of the faith formation of Catholic Youth (Orang Muda Katolik/OMK) as the future generation of the Church, who are called to participate actively in ecclesial and social life. However, the demands of education, employment, social media, and the growing culture of individualism pose significant challenges to the consistent practice of their spiritual life. This study aims to describe the spiritual practices of Catholic Youth at Saint Johannes Sukamandi Outstation and to analyze them through the lens of the spirituality of Saint John Paul II. This research employed a qualitative approach using a single-case study design. The case was bounded to the spiritual practices of Catholic Youth at Saint Johannes Sukamandi Outstation as a bounded system. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews with eight Catholic Youth members, one youth mentor, and the Chair of the Outstation Pastoral Council, as well as documentation. The data were analyzed using the interactive model of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification, while data credibility was ensured through source and technique triangulation. The findings reveal that the spiritual practices of Catholic Youth are reflected not only in their participation in the Eucharistic celebration, prayer life, faith-sharing activities, liturgical ministry, and social relationships, but also in the embodiment of Christ-centeredness, active participation, solidarity, and respect for human dignity as emphasized in the spirituality of Saint John Paul II. Nevertheless, the consistent implementation of these values is constrained by personal commitments, limited motivation, and a lack of self-confidence in ministry. The novelty of this study lies in employing the spirituality of Saint John Paul II as an analytical lens for understanding the spiritual practices of Catholic Youth within the context of an outstation community. This approach contributes to the development of studies on Catholic youth spirituality by positioning the teachings of Saint John Paul II as an interpretative framework for examining spiritual life in the local Church. The study concludes that continuous, contextual, and participatory faith formation is essential to strengthen the spiritual life of Catholic Youth. Such formation should be grounded in the spirituality of Saint John Paul II so that Catholic Youth may grow as Christ-centered individuals, participate actively in the life of the Church, and bear authentic witness to their faith in society.
