Abstract

In the practice of baptism from the early church period to the present, one of the central issues concerns the formulation of baptism. One of the verses addressing baptism is Acts 2:38. The clause “be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ” in this verse has posed a serious problem, as it is often considered to be in conflict with Jesus’ command to baptize “in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit” in Matthew 28:19. In this paper, the author seeks to explore the meaning of the clause “be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ” in Acts 2:38 by employing Grassmick’s exegetical method, which involves contextual, literary, textual, structural, grammatical, historical, theological, and exegetical analysis. Based on this analysis, it is found that the meaning of the clause “be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ” in this passage emphasizes that the foundation of baptism received by believers is Jesus Christ Himself, His person inseparably united with His redemptive work. Thus, it becomes clear that this text is not addressing the formula of baptism in a way that could be contrasted with Matthew 28:19, where Jesus commands baptism to be performed in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Rather, the passage is concerned with the theological basis and significance underlying baptism.
