Abstract

Political polarization has increasingly contributed to tension, hostility, and social division, including within Christian communities. This situation challenges the church to understand peace not merely as the absence of conflict but as an active calling to foster reconciled relationships amid differences. This study aims to analyze the theological meaning of peacemaking in Matthew 5:9 and examine its relevance to the role of the church in responding to political polarization. The study employs a qualitative approach through a literature review and biblical study of Matthew 5:9, supported by theological literature and studies on peace and political polarization. The findings indicate that being a peacemaker involves an active commitment to promoting peace through reconciliation, love, dialogue, and responsibility for communal life. This understanding emphasizes that the church should not become part of political conflict arising from differences in political views, but should function as a space for reconciliation and as an example of respectful engagement with others. Therefore, Matthew 5:9 provides a theological foundation for the church to fulfill its calling as a peacemaker in politically polarized society.
