Wealth and the Danger of Forgetting God: A Hermeneutical Study Deuteronomy 8:11–18

Deuteronomy 8:11–18 provides a theological warning concerning the human tendency to forget God precisely in the midst of the abundance they enjoy as part of the covenant. This study aims to examine the theological meaning of the passage and its relevance for the life of contemporary faith communities. The method employed is contextual hermeneutics, encompassing an analysis of the historical and literary contexts of the book of Deuteronomy, an examination of the textual structure (including the chiastic pattern of vv. 11–18), an analysis of the key terms hayil and koah, and an effort to relate the meaning of the text to the realities of contemporary life. The findings indicate that the text does not equate wealth with life-giving power from God, but rather connects abundance (hayil) with the temptation to claim strength and success (koah) as the result of one’s own ability. The main finding of this study confirms a progressive sequence within the text: the abundance enjoyed by the people gives rise to a sense of self-sufficiency, which then produces the claim that success is the result of one’s own strength, causing the people to forget God and ultimately damaging their covenant relationship with Him. Furthermore, the warning in Deuteronomy 8:11–18 also touches upon a socio-economic dimension, as the text connects abundance with the management of the produce of the land and the resources of the community, indicating that success cannot be understood solely as an individual achievement. This awareness is also relevant as a critical lens through which to examine tendencies in contemporary economic discourse that position human beings as the sole determinants of their own success. This study concludes that the central message of Deuteronomy 8:11–18 is a call to continually remember God, refrain from claiming success as the result of one’s own strength, and remain faithful in obedience to His covenant.
