Abstract

The understanding of suffering is found in the Bible and is often a source of questions and debates. Some view suffering as something negative that believers should not experience, while others believe that it is part of divine grace. Philippians 1:29 affirms that not only faith, but also suffering for Christ is a gift given to believers. This study aims to understand the true meaning of the statement in Philippians 1:29. The analysis reveals that the use of the passive verb echaristh? (‘has been granted’) for both ‘to believe’ (pisteuein) and ‘to suffer’ (paschein) places them in an equivalent theological position as divine gifts. In Paul’s theological framework, suffering is not a negative consequence of faith but rather a manifestation of participation in Christ’s suffering, which is both soteriological and eschatological in nature. Therefore, suffering for Christ's sake should be seen as a great gift, not as a curse, so that it can be accepted with the right spiritual attitude as part of fellowship with Christ.
