Abstract

Proverbs 12:4 and Proverbs 31:10–31 are frequently used in Christian family formation in Indonesia. In some practices documented in the literature, these two texts are read as prescribing gender roles that place the primary responsibility for the honor of the household on the wife. This reading needs to be examined in light of the national divorce profile. Statistics Indonesia (Badan Pusat Statistik) recorded 399,921 finalized divorce cases in 2024. Of these, 62.8 percent were categorized as cases involving continuous disputes and quarrels, while approximately three-quarters of the cases were filed by wives. This profile indicates relational problems involving both parties, whereas normative readings tend to direct the demands primarily toward one party. This study aims to examine the function of these two texts within the wisdom framework of the Book of Proverbs and to formulate a pastoral counseling model that takes the aforementioned divorce profile into account. The study employs an interpretive paradigm with a transformative orientation and a library research design. The analysis includes a grammatical-historical exegesis of the Masoretic Text, a thematic analysis of selected published journal articles, and an examination of secondary statistical data. The study yields three interpretive findings. First, Proverbs 12:4 presents the wife as the subject of the second colon, while the category mebisha belongs to a moral category that, elsewhere in Proverbs, is also applied to children and servants. Second, the predicate ateret (“crown”) in Proverbs 12:4 resonates with the Wisdom motif network found in Proverbs 4:8–9, 8:35, and 18:22. Third, the acrostic structure of Proverbs 31:10–31 can be read as a concluding framework that echoes Proverbs 1–9. These findings are formulated into a conceptual model of mutual-sapiential pastoral counseling. The model consists of four stages and is complemented by an exclusion protocol for cases involving domestic violence. The contribution of this study lies in integrating sapiential exegesis with Indonesia’s divorce profile and translating this integration into an ethically bounded pastoral model.
